Places To Visit

If you think the Taj Mahal is the only famous tourist attraction in Agra, you are wrong. While the Taj Mahal is undoubtedly the crown jewel of Agra, the historical city is home to multiple sites that are a remnant of the golden reign of the Mughals and the impact it had on the country’s architectural heritage. Listed below are some of the most popular places to visit in Agra. If you are on an Agra tour and do not visit any of these locations, your tour is incomplete!

1. Taj Mahal

This is indeed a no-brainer! The Taj Mahal is not only the most famous monument of Agra but of the entire country. One of the New Seven Wonders of the World and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the stunning marble structure is a traveller’s paradise. A Taj Mahal tour not only introduces you to the epitome of architectural perfection but also tells you the tale of the immortal love of Shah Jahan who commissioned the white mausoleum in memory of his beloved wife, Mumtaz Mahal.

2. Agra Fort

Located just 3 km away from the Taj Mahal is the grandiose Agra Fort. It is one of those historical sites that you cannot miss. Inside the fort complex of this UNESCO World Heritage Site are several buildings that are history’s most beautiful and precious gifts to us. From the Jahangir Mahal to Diwan-i-Aam and Diwan-i-Khas, every place transports you back to the Mughal Era. Not to forget the leisurely Anguri Bagh that makes for the most peaceful and eye-catching garden in the city.

3. Itimad-ud-Daulah’s Tomb

One of the most unique and fascinating landmarks in an Agra sightseeing tour, the tomb of Itimad-ud-Daulah is a stunning work of art. Due to its similarity with the Taj Mahal, it is often referred to as the Baby Taj, because despite the architectural resemblance, it lacks the size and magnificence of the Taj. However, what’s interesting about the building is that it was created before the Taj Mahal and is known as the draft of the Taj, a monument that influenced the creation of the iconic Taj Mahal years later.

4. Akbar’s Tomb

Situated approximately 7 km away from the city centre on the outskirts of Agra, Akbar’s Tomb is yet another remarkable creation of the Mughal architects. The mausoleum is built with white marble and sandstone which adds beauty to its form. A special fact about this structure is that unlike other tombs of Muslim Kings that face the direction of Mecca’s mosque, Akbar’s Tomb faces the direction of the rising sun.

5. Fatehpur Sikri

One of the three UNESCO World Heritage Sites in the city, Fatehpur Sikri is among the most renowned tourist places in Agra. Founded by Agra, the heritage town features unique architecture made completely with red sandstone. It is home to some of the most magnificent sites like the highest gateway in the world—the Buland Darwaza, Jama Masjid, Panch Mahal, Tomb of Salim Chishti, and the palace of Emperor Akbar’s favourite wife—Jodha Bai Palace.

6. Mehtab Bagh

Built by Shah Jahan to enjoy the undisturbed view of the Taj and appreciate its beauty, the Mehtab Bagh is one of the most popular Mughal Gardens. It is situated right across the Taj Mahal and offers the most picturesque sight of the monument. Photographers often visit the garden to click the most mesmerizing pictures of the Taj during sunrise and sunset.

7. Kalakriti Cultural and Convention Center

If you can’t have enough of the Taj Mahal, we have yet another experience that you will love. Mohabbat The Taj Show is a theatrical performance full of dance, drama, and music that is performed by a huge group of talented artists at the Kalakriti Cultural and Convention Center. The play narrates the tale of the Taj Mahal—from the love story of Shah Jahan and Mumtaz Mahal to the struggles faced in the creation of the Taj.

8. Sadar Bazaar and Kinari Bazaar

No city tour is complete without visiting its local markets. Every Agra travel guide will take you to at least two of the city’s most famous markets—Sadar Bazaar and Kinari Bazaar. The former deals in handicrafts, garments, sweets, and leather products while the latter is a historical bazaar most famous for its wholesale markets. Both these places offer excellent retail therapy. You could explore the local stores for popular marble articles and leather bags and shoes.
