History of Agra

While Agra gained prominence under the Mughal rule, the rich and varied history of Agra goes back to the pre-Mughal era. Little is known about that time, as the city is said to have faced heavy destruction by Mahmud of Ghazni. It was only during the Delhi Sultanate’s rule that Emperor Sikandar Lodi brought Agra back into the picture by making it the seat of the government.
